What to Expect at Your Intestinal Rehabilitation Evaluation
Our multidisciplinary team will assess your condition and recommend the best course of treatment.
When you have been referred to the Center for Intestinal Rehabilitation at the Miami Transplant Institute, you can expect a comprehensive evaluation to determine the best course of treatment. An early analysis of your abdominal condition is desirable because it can lead to better long-term outcomes.
Individual Evaluations
Every patient considering some form of intestinal rehabilitation is evaluated on an individual basis. It includes a thorough assessment of the remaining bowel in detail by means of history, laboratory tests, motility and functional tests, and imaging. An evaluation also includes an update of your health history, blood and urine tests, chest x-ray, EKG, heart function testing, a physical examination, an assessment by a social worker, assessment by a dietician, an insurance review by our financial counselor, and additional testing as needed.
Reviewing the Results
When the evaluation is completed, our institute’s multidisciplinary team will review the results of your tests, procedures, and consultations. They may decide that further testing or other is needed, work to optimize parenteral nutrition, recommend our surgical interventions, or for very select patients, recommend an intestinal or multivisceral transplant.
In any case, our team will discuss your treatment options so you can make a well-informed decision about the best course of treatment.
