Making a Referral for a Kidney Transplant

Our life-saving transplants offer an effective long-term treatment alternative to dialysis.

If a patient has been diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease or is on dialysis, it’s important to be referred for a comprehensive evaluation of the condition as soon as possible. A primary care physician or kidney specialist (nephrologist) can refer patients to the Miami Transplant Institute for a transplant evaluation, or patients can also contact us directly to schedule an appointment.

Our transplant team can draw on the comprehensive resources of Jackson Health System to provide multidisciplinary care—an important consideration because patients’ medical condition may affect other organs as well as the kidneys.

Medical Conditions

Conditions that can cause kidney failure and require a live-saving organ transplant include:

  • Diabetic kidney disease
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Chronic high blood pressure
  • Inherited genetic conditions
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Reflux nephropathy
  • Rare kidney diseases

Many of our kidney transplant patients are evaluated before starting dialysis or soon after they begin treatment. Others consider transplants when it becomes clear that an alternative to dialysis is necessary. When compared with dialysis, transplantation holds the promise of a better outcome and higher quality of life for most patients.
