Our Multidisciplinary Kidney-Pancreas and Pancreas Transplant Team
We offer an effective long-term treatment for diabetic pancreatic or kidney disease.
If a patient has kidney failure from Type I diabetes and is under the age of 55, he or she may benefit from a referral for a kidney-pancreas or pancreas-only transplant. A primary care physician, kidney specialist (nephrologist), or pancreas specialist (endocrinologist) can refer patients to the Miami Transplant Institute for a transplant evaluation. Patients can also contact our team directly to schedule an appointment.
Our transplant team can draw on the comprehensive resources of Jackson Health System to provide multidisciplinary care—an important consideration because complications from diabetes may affect other organs as well as the kidneys.
Medical Conditions
While diabetic kidney disease is the primary reason for considering a kidney-pancreas or a pancreas-only transplant, there are other conditions that can affect the functioning of both organs. Chronic high blood pressure, for instance, can damage the pancreas as well as the kidneys. Certain genetic conditions or rare diseases may also play a role in the failure of these organs.
Many kidney-pancreas transplant patients are referred to our institute before starting dialysis or soon after they begin treatment. An early referral typically leads to better management of these chronic conditions until donor organs become available.
