Making a Referral for ECMO Treatment

We offer effective short-term care for heart and lung failure.

Our institute has the ability to accept Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) referrals from Florida, and other locations. Patients are typically stabilized in a local facility and then flown here for specialized treatment and potential organ transplantation.

Treating physicians can recommend patients to be transferred to the Miami Transplant Institute for ECMO evaluation and treatment.

For some of the very sickest patients enduring failure of heart and/or lung function, our program can provide life-saving, short-term support. Our team can draw on the comprehensive resources of Jackson Health System to provide multidisciplinary care—an important consideration because patients’ medical condition may affect other organs as well as the lungs and heart.

Medical Conditions

There are many dangerous conditions that can lead to ECMO treatment, including:

  • Advanced heart failure
  • Advanced lung failure
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Congenital lung disease
  • Severe pneumonia
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome
  • Severe asthma
  • Pulmonary hypertensive crisis
  • Massive blood clot in the lungs
